The border market town of Oswestry – Tourist Information Centre, Cae Glas Park and Bailey Street

Chilton House is only a few minutes’ walk, via Ferrers Road, to Oswestry Town centre. Oswestry is a market town and market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. There are speciality markets throughout the year and a monthly artisan and farmers market is held on the last Friday of each month. The town centre is a great place to shop local and independent and there is an interesting mix of cafes and pubs for days and evenings. Centre piece of Oswestry Town is Cae Glas park – a traditional and beautiful town park with a Victorian bandstand, children’s facilities and bowls and tennis.

Oswestry Town Information Centre is a great place to find out more about Oswestry and you can find it in one of Oswestry’s most iconic buildings – The Visitor and Exhibition Centre. Here you can find out more about the war poet Wilfred Owen who was born in Oswestry.

Oswestry’s border location so near to Wales has created some beautiful and interesting places to visit. Oswestry’s Iron Age Hill fort gives wonderful views across Shropshire.  The whole area is a great destination for walkers and Offa’s Dyke wanders along the top of town just on the border.

Chirk and Powis Castles are National Trust properties nearby and local village Whittington boasts its own small castle. Erddig Hall and Attingham Park are two other National Trust properties within easy reach.

Lots of water too! Don’t miss the World Heritage site of Pontcysyllte and Chirk Aqueducts – Thomas Telford’s stream in the sky is a must visit day out whilst you are staying with us at Chilton House.  Llanrhaeadr Waterfall, Lake Vyrnwy and the Montgomery and Llangollen Canals are nearby too.

Oswestry is a great base for walking and cycling holidays whether you are walking Offa’s Dyke or exploring the Borderlands on foot or by pedal power, Chilton House welcomes both walkers and cyclists. Click here for more information.

In fact, you can stay a week and take a different direction each day and still want to stay longer. We hope you will want to come back to Chilton House again and again!
